India Shani temple to allow women worshippers
|
Authorities of a Hindu shrine in India's western Maharashtra state have decided to allow female worshippers enter the inner sanctum, reports say.
This followed weeks of protests by women's activists demanding entry to the Shani Shingnapur #temple.
The temple has for centuries been open only to men, one of the few in India to preserve the tradition.
Last month the Bombay High court affirmed the right of women to pray inside all temples. Read more...

‘World Class’ Optical Telescope, and India’s Largest, to Be Activated near Nainital
|
India’s largest ground-based optical #telescopes in Devasthal in Uttarakhand, will be switched on March 30 by the prime ministers of India and Belgium from Brussels, during Narendra Modi’s day-long visit to the country. The telescope is the product of an Indo-Belgian collaborative effort, assisted by the Russian Academy of Sciences, that was kicked off in 2007.

A "vegetarian" gene may have evolved amongst groups of people who have historically eaten less meat.
A team at Cornell University describes the genetic variation in a study published in Molecular Biology and Evolution -- a variation that they say has "evolved in populations that have eaten a plant-based diet over hundreds of generations". That includes areas of India, Africa and East Asia.

India's Bihar State Bans All Alcohol Sales, Starting Tuesday

The Indian state of Bihar completely banned the sale of alcohol on Tuesday, including at bars and hotel across the state.
The state government had announced an end to sales of locally brewed liquor last week and said a complete ban would be phased over six months.
