Mr Narendra Modi won 282 seats in the Lok Sabha parliament – a clear majority of ten – to become the first leader to win a single party majority in 30 years. His party’s wider National Democratic Alliance took a total of 337 in a sweep which wiped out the Congress Party in some of India’s largest states and left it with just 44 seats, 162 fewer than in 2009.
