The National Consumer Helpline (NCH) is operated by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India. It provides consumers with a convenient way to seek help when they experience problems with products, services, online purchases or sellers.

The NCH provides consumers with several ways to register a grievance. Consumers can use the online portal, NCH mobile app, UMANG app or WhatsApp. The current helpline number is 1915, available from 8 AM to 8 PM. The service also supports consumers across 17 languages, making it more accessible to people throughout India.

Had a Problem With a Store or Online Seller?

Buying something online or from a store does not always result in a satisfactory experience. Your order may not arrive, a product may be defective, a seller may refuse a refund, or the service you received may not match what was promised.

If you have already tried contacting the seller or company's customer service and your problem has not been resolved, the National Consumer Helpline can be an important next step.

The NCH provides a centralized platform where consumers can register grievances and seek assistance with consumer-related issues. It is designed to create awareness, advise consumers and facilitate grievance redressal.

What Problems Can Consumers Report?

Consumers can register grievances relating to consumer issues through the NCH. This can include problems involving products, services, online purchases and other transactions where the consumer believes their interests have not been properly addressed.

For example, you may consider approaching NCH if:

Your order was not delivered.
You received a damaged or defective product.
A seller has not provided an expected refund.
A company has failed to provide an advertised service.
You believe you have been subjected to an unfair consumer practice.
A seller or service provider has not satisfactorily resolved your complaint.

How Does the National Consumer Helpline Work?

Consumers can register a grievance through the NCH website or by calling 1915 or 1800 11 4000. Complaints can also be submitted through SMS, WhatsApp, the NCH mobile app and UMANG.

Once a grievance is registered, a unique docket number is generated. The complaint can then be forwarded to the relevant company, agency, regulator or other organization for resolution. Consumers can use the system to track their grievance.

A Useful Step Before Going to a Consumer Commission

The National Consumer Helpline functions as a pre-litigation alternative dispute resolution mechanism. This means it provides consumers with an opportunity to try to resolve their complaint before taking the matter to a Consumer Commission.

If the issue remains unresolved or the consumer is not satisfied with the outcome, the consumer can approach the appropriate Consumer Commission.

Therefore, consumers do not necessarily have to begin with formal legal proceedings. NCH can provide a simpler first step for attempting to resolve many consumer complaints.

Consumers Can Also Learn About Their Rights

The NCH website is more than a complaint-registration portal. It provides information designed to help consumers understand their rights and responsibilities.

The Consumer Protection Act provides consumers with important rights, including the Right to Safety, Right to be Informed, Right to Choose, Right to be Heard, Right to Redressal and Right to Consumer Education.

Knowing these rights can help consumers make better purchasing decisions and recognize when a transaction or business practice may require further attention.

How to Contact the National Consumer Helpline

If you have had a problem with a store, website, seller or service provider and your complaint has not been resolved, consider contacting the National Consumer Helpline.

Call: 1915 or 1800 11 4000
Email: nch-ca@gov.in
WhatsApp/SMS: 8800001915
Website: consumerhelpline.gov.in

The NCH website also provides options for registering grievances online, using the NCH mobile app and accessing the service through UMANG.

For consumers, the important message is simple: if something went wrong with your purchase and the seller is not resolving the problem, don't assume that you have no options. The National Consumer Helpline provides a government-backed channel through which you can register your grievance and seek assistance.
