Tasting India's coveted holy sweet
Getting your hands on a Tirupati laddoo is not easy. To eat the famous holy sweet, given as an offering at one of India's holiest Hindu shrines, Tirumala Tirupati, you don't need to shell out a lot of money. The #temple in southern Andhra Pradesh state provides two laddoos at a subsidised cost of 10 rupees ($0.15; £0.11) each, and customers are allowed to buy another two at 25 rupees each. But "allowed" is the key word here. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-36832237

India Shani temple to allow women worshippers
Authorities of a Hindu shrine in India's western Maharashtra state have decided to allow female worshippers enter the inner sanctum, reports say. Konark Temple: stories in stone celebrate miracle of the sun
For many visitors, this is as good as it gets, but just half an hour away by road is the spectacular #Konark #Temple and this is the real reason I’ve come to Puri. “Here the language of stone surpasses the language of man,” wrote 1913 Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. http://www.theaustralian....ory-e6frg8rf-1227393452626

India: History & Culture

The shrine contains a 20-foot sandstone statue from the fifth century A.D. of the dying Buddha, lying vacant-faced on his right side. Since it was discovered in a temple ruin in 1876, the iconic figure has drawn thousands of devotees, who leave offerings of fruit, flowers and candy. #temples

India: Travel & Tourism
Like other #temples in the region, Meenakshi Temple of Madurai is Dravidian in form, a tall, broad but slightly pyramiding tower with dark, dank interiors. The Dravidians, darker-skinned people driven south by invaders from the north, had no arch or dome to lighten their places of worship.
